Brazil is home to one of the largest companies in the energy sector, Petrobras. The company’s functions include; producing, refining, and transporting oil and gas products, as well as being one of the world leaders in the technologies for exploration in deep and ultra-deep waters.
Leonardo is a global high-tech company and one of the key players in Aerospace, Defense and Security. This company has been present in Brazil for more than twenty years through its subsidiary Telespazio Brasil, one of the leading Brazilian providers of satellite services and solutions in the communications, multimedia, and Earth observation sectors, as well as engineering, operations and maintenance services for satellite ground systems.
On April 1, 2019, Leonardo signed a contract with Petrobras to begin detecting oil spills using COSMO-SkyMed Earth Observation Satellites. These satellites will monitor over 50 oil rigs north of Rio de Janero, daily, along with 40 other critical locations.
Leonardo aims to detect any oil spills from the exploration and production operations, and will supply Petrobras with an average of 150 images per month from the satellites.
The COSMO-SkyMed satellites are the most advanced radar Earth observation system and specialized technical services available 24 hours a day. They are also the only ones capable of providing night and day information in any weather condition with a high frequency of review, ensuring coverage of the entire area and of additional 40 critical locations every 48 hours.
This contract will be very helpful in detecting oil spills. It will do so efficiently and like no other.
